Music Moves The Soul and Heals The Heart

If you ever get a chance, go and check out and their videoed TEDTalks. These are some inspirational, funny, and ingenious speakers who give ten to eighteen minute talks on a topic.

Ji-Hae Park is a world-famous concert violinist who suffered from severe depression. In the moving video below, she talks about how finding something to put her energy and emotions into – music – helped to bring her out of her depression and the importance of changing your perspective and outlook on life. Depression is characterized by isolation, depressed mood, irritability, changes in sleep and eating habits often resulting in dramatic weight change, diminished interest in normal activity, sometimes a loss of the will to live, vegetativeness, and often profound self loathing . Imagine the despair Ms Park talked about. Have you ever felt that degree of loneliness? ?Do you know others who have been afflicted by depression? Depression is the common cold of mental illness. It is a bottomless black whole often characterized by hopeless despair. Then the WOW came. The realization that for her, music could be liberating. What do you have in your life that binds you. A failing relationship? A sinking career? Drugs or alcoholism? Are you really lost or is it just another turn in the road?

Depression will systematically bias how you view life, rob you of energy, interest and your soul. You are not disturbed by life but only by how you view your world. Shakespeare said it best, “Their is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.”. Where is the evidence that you are ok? That things are actually better than you think? Reach out. Take a risk, albeit a small one. Be gentle with yourself as you might with your best friend.
How inspiring is that last piece? The energy was powerful . You too are only restricted by your beliefs? Your belief that you are a failure or incompetent or require the approval of others.Nonsense. The approval that matters is self validation. When was the last time you felt great even high by some achievement or goal attained? Refocus your life on your achievements and goals .We are imperfect people raised in a imperfect world. Forgive yourself. Getup . Use your supports and try again because the only true failure is not getting up.
